La Oveja Negra Tamarindo Hostel & Surf Camp

This was the worst hostel we’ve stayed in Costa Rica (and one of the worst hostels I’ve ever stayed in!) and I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone that cares about cleanlinesses. Everywhere smelled like drains. The showers were flooded with dirty water from the drains and when we asked for it to be cleared, we were met with an attitude as we were expecting too much. Then they drained it but they didn’t clean it. The bathroom sink was filthy the whole time, the fridge looked like had been cleaned for a long time and the bedroom floor was dirty. There was a smell of drain by the swimming pool and it looked like it hadn’t been cleaned for a long time.

Never going there again. Got home feom the beach late and a drunk girl had taken my bunk and threw all my things on the floor. The security guard just told me to deal with it and take another bunk that was already used and wet. Worst hostel I’ve ever been to.

Absolutely filthy.one one set of toilet/ shower facilities for the whole hosel which look like they havnt been cleaned. Saw cleaners ‘changing’ beds, didn’t even change covers. Receptionist unfriendly, unhelpful, didn’t know what beds were allocated to us, when asked for help with local busses and transport she just said ‘we wouldn’t get any’, kids running around screaming and fighting into the early hours. £33 a night for a 10 person dorm in these conditions is a joke.

We payed for a room with air conditioning, it did not work and the room was hot. The room was not clean and smelled bad. We tried canceling the following night and didn't get all of our money back because we payed by card. The manager was very rude and unhelpful and did not even apologize for their issues.

Good breakfast, spacious room, but too loud, too messy, too busy. If you're looking for a place to sleep well, look elsewhere.

We went here when we visited tamarindo, we just went to the restaurant and had a couple drinks and food which was great but at the end of the meal one of the workers was cleaning the table while we were still sitting there and tried to STEAL ONE OF OUR PHONES. He tried to hide it by tucking it under his arm fast and didn’t give it back until we yelled at him. They tried to cover it up and act like it was an accident but it was clear it was on purpose. If you go here be careful of this.

I rarely post negative feedbacks but this place is a shame. Extremely loud music until the early morning. Im in my bed right now and I feel like im right in the middle of the dance floor. There is only 2 persons dancing and the d.j keep the volume to maximum power. Very bright light in the room as well, curtains are transparent and walls paper thin. Staff didnt want to give me a key to my room as they dont have enough for everyone. So when the door is locked i have to run around and try to find a "volunteer" to get a key. Avoid at all cost.

The wifi wasn't working and when we make the staff aware of the situation they blamed our phones and didn't do anything to fix it. Stayed one night and left

I have a comment about the coffee shop/restaurant. I've been coming there in the morning for a couple weeks now. Apparently it was redone and has a really nice vibe, it did for me until this morning. This morning I was told by a server that I should not bring my food in, given that they serve food. In my case, it's a little more than just bringing food in because I like my food or because I'm too cheap to buy food. I bring my food in because I'm very allergic to many items and I've stopped wanting to chance what will or won't make me react, which is what I told the woman. She didn't seem to like my answer because she proceeded to tell me all the items that I could eat there without knowing anything at all about my allergies. I would rather pay $10 for the workspace then be told not to bring my food in. I get that we cant have everyone bringing food in a coffee shop I really do. But perhaps ask me if I could take it outside or be a bit more sensitive about the reason I was bringing in my chia pudding. In coffee shops, people come for coffee and to work. If you don't want people working for a few hours without paying for more than just a coffee, then you need to be a bit more clear about the types of guests you want to serve. This comment was certainly not in the Pura Vida spirit. While I might come back here, it will only be because Nordico is full.

Didn’t find the most friendly place… and it’s loud on the street long into the night, but the music is pretty cool if you enjoy it. Our friend was staying there at the hostel, so we thought we could come hang out at the bar and listen to the music, but they kicked us all out when we didn’t order drinks other than water after like 5 minutes. So if you are drinking, I guess it would be nice

Been here before, food is good and atmosphere is Great service is really really bad can't even get any service after your first order as the waitress walk by you like your air as your beer glass is empty had to leave no serviceasked for a coup of water a few times so the bartenders broght me a bottled water witch i didn't order oh well i normally overtip and like Great reviews but just because you charge for service automatically doesn't mean you don't need to give it, won't be back and won't recommend this place as i live here.

I love hostels but this was not enjoyable. The rooms feel like you’re in prison and they play music until 11 at night via a DJ and the base rattles the entire hostel. The only redeeming quality is the staff which is incredible!

Chef, the Poppers! You don’t know to boil the jalapeño first? You bite and the entire thing slides out. Red sauce is like raw tomato, no flavor. Otherwise, good margarita mix. Nice people.

El servicio de restaurante es pésimo, la espera para ser atendido es demasiado larga, los meseros son poco atentos. Me ha pasado lo mismo en 2 ocasiones

Very cute restaurant and pool area attached.
The AC common areas are nice but the bathroom soap dispenser has been empty for 3 days in the middle of a pandemic. Not cool.

Lugar pequeño, acogedor. Bar y restaurante. Se vende comida mexicana y bebidas alcohólicas y no alcohólicas. Ubicado en el centro de la localidad de Tamarindo. Situado justo a la orilla de una de las calles más concurridas del lugar. También se consigue algunos artículos de conveniencia como anteojos de sol y otras conveniencias.

Had a tofu poke bowl here and it was deLISH! Staff were nice and the restaurant is lovely with AC inside. Only downside is the portion size.

El lugar es lindo muy lindo. Pero depende en que plan quieras ir. Suele haber musica en vivo y no da para ir con niños ya que la musica esta muy fuerte! Se como muy bien y los platos son accesibles! La atencion de las chicas maravillosa!

Super Hostel in Tamarindo!
Der Staff hilft einem immer weiter wenn man Fragen hat und alle sind so sympathisch, man fühlt sich einfach wohl. Die Gäste die da waren sind auch super kommunikativ und man kommt gut ins Gespräch. Besonders cool ist der Poolbereich, man trifft dort einfach auf andere Reisende. Die Dorms sind okay, recht lieblos eingerichtet, aber es erfüllt seinen Zweck. Es gibt eine Klimaanlage! Zu den Bädern muss ich sagen, dass diese eine Renovierung wirklich mehr als nötig haben, das geht teilweise wirklich nicht.
Zusammenfassend passt das Preis-Leistungsverhältnis und ich würde das Hostel definitiv empfehlen!

Great location! Surf lessons were amazing and everyone got up. Met some really fun people and a very active place. Would highly recommend. And the free breakfast included with the stay was delicious.

Only downside was the shower in the room was very low pressure and kind of pricey for a hostel.
