Witch's Rock Surf Camp

This is one of the best trips we have ever taken. Everyone at the camp is so kind! If you’re thinking about booking this trip, do it! This was an amazing experience and we will be back.

I've been here again and again over the last 7 years and I keep returning because of the hospitality and wonderful experiences I have every time I'm at Witch's Rock. If you want to learn to surf or are a surfer looking for a great place to get great waves, this is the spot.

Finished my 7th trip to Witchs Rock an cannot wait to come back. I brought my two kids with me and they absolutely loved it. The staff, instructors and everything about this place is amazing. The only problem is I now have to bring my kids back with me! It’s going to be hard to leave them at home now that they’ve seen the magic at Witchs Rock. My favorite trip each and every year.

Such a magical spot! Having direct access to the beach + food + your board makes surf camp soooo convenient and delightful. I was a solo traveler and within a few days felt like I was back at summer camp as a kid. The fellow campers + instructors are all so nice and I had a blast.

One note – Tamarindo is a v busy tourist town and the Witch's Rock rooms are right on the main street so it can be a bit loud. If you're a light sleeper or looking for dead quiet, this isn't the place for you.

Paradise in Central America

I’ve been to Witch’s Rock Surf Camp (WRSC) three times since 2016. I love it so much I reserved a spot for a week in December of 2022, just before I left last week. (By doing so, I locked in a 20% discount.) However, I don’t need a financial incentive to return. They had me at “paddle, paddle, paddle” when I first visited them just shy of my 50th birthday. This is when WRSC “re-taught” me how to surf after a 30-year hiatus. After a 20-minute seminar on the beach, I paddled out and stood up on my first wave. I have worked with three different instructors: Rafa, Manrique, and Johan. Each coach was incredibly insightful, friendly, patient, and encouraging. (Johan is hysterical! He had me laughing my way through a tour of three different breaks over a week-long surfing safari.) Some of the spots were accessed by boat, others by a fancy touring van. WRSC offers a turnkey, complete package with transport to and from the airport in Liberia, clean and comfortable accommodations, two-hour daily surf sessions, video coaching, video footage to share with friends and family, a hearty breakfast every morning, other activities besides surfing for an extra fee, and COVID testing before you depart, each delivered with warm and gracious Costa Rican hospitality. I am in love with this country and plan to visit WSRC every year for the rest of my life. It’s perfect for families with children (young and older), couples, and solo travelers like me. Beginner, intermediate, and expert surfers welcome. I have visited twice by myself and had a perfect balance of alone time and several invitations to go out with groups. Everybody was so nice! I hope you will go! You’ll thank me later.

We had the best surf vacation here! This is largely because of Chanty, our coach. We all improved and learned so much at the intermediate level. He made learning new skills so fun. He taught us about Tamarindo and surfing. He’s a born teacher and made everything so easy to learn. Also, Diego at the front desk went above and beyond to help us with tours and restaurant reservations and suggestions.

Great time here, super safe if solo or in a group. Our instructor Carlos was the best and got all of us surfing and went above and beyond. Hope to be back soon!

Witch’s Rock beginner surf camp program was great! The instructor was very professional and helped us a lot. The hotel is conveniently on the beach and there were many helpful seminars each day. There are videographers every day so you get all your surfing videos at the end of the trip. I would definitely recommend Witch’s Rock.

Since 2003 I've taken 6 trips to WRSC in Tamarindo. The staff are friendly. Awesome surf instructors. Randall and Johan have great talent, patience and enthusiastic when working with guests.

I've often traveled solo and have met people from all over the states, and we've become great friends. WRSC is a home away from home.

It's been impressive to see the changes and upgrades from trip to trip. I do miss the big school bus, and hammocks near the restaurant. Although I've enjoyed the pools, nachos, coffee smoothies, fruit smoothies, the penthouse sun deck and fancy van rides. Keep up the great work Joe and staff! See you again soon.

Pura Vida!

WE LOVE WITCH"S! We did the beginner program 5 years ago and came back this October as intermediates - we were just as blown away as the first time, if not more. Witch's makes everything so incredibly easy for you - free coffee all day every day, amazing free breakfast you can eat before or after your daily surf lesson, a lovely place to stay right on the beach, surfboard rentals, daily lessons and seminars, video analysis and instruction, live music. It's simply our favorite place to go.

And we LOVED the intermediate surf program. We traveled daily by boat (Pru Pru!) or van (Wilfredo!) to the beach that was breaking best for our skill level. We got to surf so many amazing breaks - Avellanas, Playa Grande, Marbella, Casitas, and even Witch's Rock and Olie's Point one day which was a dream come true. The seminars on paddling, and in particular Rafa's balance board session were SO helpful for working on our technique. We left so much stronger and more skilled and loving surfing even more than when we arrived.

And beyond all this, the people who work at Witch's, whether the instructors (Jonathan, Manrique, David were all great!), or those working in the restaurant and admin side (Diana, Kaslin, Lavina, Alison, Andres!). Everyone makes you feel so welcome and taken care of. Anything you need, they do their best to make it happen for you. Every time you are greeted, you're greeted as an old friend. This team is truly welcoming and kind, and we loved getting to spend an entire week with them.

We had the trip of our lives at Witch's Rock Surf camp! The staff, the food, the instructors, location and surf was all top notch. We learned so much and great surfing for all ages. Everyone welcomed us like we were family. Robert August made appearances and sang Happy birthday to our daughter. That was pretty cool. The was a trip for the ages and I recommend this place to anyone who wants to learn to surf as well as live the pura vida life like the locals do. Everyone was great but our favorite staff members were Alison and Danny as our servers, Carlos and Randal as our surf instructors, and Diego at the front desk. Thank you to all who made this trip amazing for us!

Such an amazing place! Came back after a great trip a year ago. Appreciated the upgrades like shampoo in the showers. Some of the rooms could be renovated; however the overall great vibe of the people and feeling of friends and family here make it the best place in Tamarindo!

Short four day trip to work on my beginner level surfing with my surf instructor Andrey. This is my second time to Witches Rock and I would highly recommend if you are looking to start surfing or are experienced and want a surf camp experience.
